You Are What You Eat – What ARE We Eating? What Are GMOs?

What are GMOs exactly?

I have never even heard the term GMOs until a few years ago.  I think the average consumer probably has no idea what it stands for.  We are all familiar with the term “You are what you eat.”  Most consumers do not really know what it is that they are eating; I say this because an average consumer doesn’t know what has gone into what they are eating.

If you wanted to eat healthy 15 years ago you starting eating more produce-fruits and vegetables.  Did you know that the average strawberry contains traces of 14, yes 14 pesticides!    A recent USDA study showed that 92% of the apples studied contained at least 1 pesticide even after being washed and peeled!  Unfortunately as bad as that sounds that is not the worse of story!

Okay so GMOs stands for Genetically Modified Organisms.  Through genetic engineering this experimental technology merges DNA from different species, creating unstable combinations that cannot occur in nature or in traditional crossbreeding.

Almost all GMOs have been engineered to withstand direct application of herbicide and/or to produce an insecticide.  What does that mean?  Seeds have been modified with pesticides or herbicides so that when the crop is treated with more chemicals it does not affect the plant, just the unwanted weeds.  In turn, we are developing “super weeds” that are becoming tolerant to the use of chemicals so that more and eventually more chemicals are needed!  I don’t know about you but the idea of eating food that has been infused with chemicals from before germination doesn’t sound appealing to me!

The exact dangers of GMOs are really unknown.  After all, the tests that put the GMO products on the market were performed by the same companies that created the product!  Most of the developed world either restricts or completely bans the use of GMOs!  All countries in the European nation, Australia and Japan included ban the use of GMOs!

I don’t know about you, but once I started to become educated about what is being done with the food in the US, everything I put in my mouth I looked at and thought “This is just like eating chemicals”!  How can I in good conscience feed my family something that could harm them?   Right now GMOs are not required to be labeled and 70% of all items on the shelf at the grocery stores contain GMOs in some form!

The only true way to know that you are not eating food that has been genetically engineered in some way is by choosing ORGANIC food!   I am not a politician, I am simply a mother who cares and thinks that I should provide the best possible for my family.  How can something so unnatural, not created the way God intended for us be processed by our bodies?  Do I really want to compromise my family’s well being for someone’s pocketbook?

Medication after medication to be followed by chemotherapy, my husband’s oncologist really encouraged us to start looking at not only what we eat but what we surround our family with in our home.  What chemicals do we clean with?  There started my families journey down the road to a more natural/organic lifestyle.  I will share more on that later, but for those of you that this knowledge is new to you it can be very overwhelming at first.  Don’t let it be.  Take action with what you eat in small steps, make small changes for yourself and your family!
