Naturepedic is a brand that many of us are familiar with with regards to natural and organic bedding. They make organic mattresses, mattress pads, sheets and pillows. Naturepedic is a family owned business located in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. Their workers are skilled craftsman that take pride in their work, paying special attention to every detail to ensure long lasting durability.
They choose to use organic cotton fabric as the covers for their organic quilted mattress toppers. Organic cotton is the purest form of cotton and a healthier alternative to synthetic fabrics. Naturepedic uses only U.S. grown and certified organic cotton as filling for its mattresses and buys directly from USDA certified sources. This ensures purity, organic reliability and support for U.S. farmers.
Why is Organic Cotton Superior?
Many times we forget that our skin is our largest organ. Our skin absorbs has the ability to absorb what it comes in contact with. According to the Organic Trade Association about 55 million pounds of pesticides being sprayed on 12.8 million acres of cotton during 2003. That is a sobering thought!
The Organic certification standard ensures that the cotton includes:
- NO synthetic pesticides
- NO synthetic fertilizers
- NO genetically modified organisms
- NO carcinogenic, mutagenic, teratogenic chemicals
- NO endocrine disruptors
- NO non-biodegradable detergents, degreasers, or surfactants
- NO chlorine bleach
- NO plastisols
- NO other synthetic chemicals
Since we spend upwards of 1/3 of our lives sleeping, organic bedding is the best solution for our family, as well as the responsible actions to take for the earth.
What exactly is the filler PLA made from?
I couldn’t explain it any better, so here is the explanation from Natruepedic’s site: “PLA fiber starts with an abundant, natural and renewable resource – plants. The starch gets isolated from the other components of the plant and gets turned into sugar. The sugar is fermented in a process similar to making yogurt, to create lactic acid. Lactic acid is a naturally occurring material that gives the “tang” to yogurt and makes your muscles ache after a work-out. From lactic acid a molecule called lactide is created. Water is then removed and it gets crystallized to create the high-performance polymer – polylactide (PLA).”
Most important to me is that is does not off-gas harmful chemicals!
Although I have to say, my daughter’s twin size bed is still not set up, we tried this out on Austin’s bed. I love how soft the quilted mattress pad truly is. The organic cotton material is soft and overall the mattress pad basically adds a pillow-top feeling on to your mattress. Since we have always been co-sleepers, my children were both use to sleeping on our pillow-top mattresses. You can easily add that pillow-top affect onto any mattress with Naturepedic’s quilted mattress topper.
This quilted mattress pad is not water-proof, it adds and an extra layer of cushion and absorption for your little one. It is fully machine washable (which I love) and is made right here in the US.
