Want to know a secret? I don’t wash my hair with shampoo! That’s right, I said it. I do not use shampoo or conditioner to wash my hair.
Before you go thinking that I must have disgusting looking hair, let me tell you that my hair gets clean and looks clean. In fact, it’s never looked better! What am I cleaning my hair with? Baking soda and vinegar.
Washing your hair with baking soda and vinegar is referred to as No ‘Poo. No ‘Poo is in reference to no shampoo…not some weird bathroom problem. It makes sense. Many of us use baking soda and vinegar to clean our homes, why would it not be good enough to clean our hair?
No ‘Pooing is not just frugal (because let’s be honest, it costs pennies for baking soda and vinegar!) but it’s also healthier. Your hair isn’t coated in chemicals and when you no ‘poo you help your hair get back to it’s proper oil levels. You also remove tons of build-up, which leaves your hair looking and feeling softer then it ever has before!
How to No ‘Poo
“Shampoo” – 1 tablespoon baking soda mixed in 1 cup water.
“Conditioner” – 1 tablespoon vinegar in 1 cup water. (This is the standard amount, however I started with a 50/50 ratio and now after many years am down to about 2-3 tbs in 1 cup. However, it’s best to start out with the standard amount and then troubleshoot if needed).
Get your hair wet and apply your “shampoo” to your hair. Make sure to get the mixture everywhere and you can even rub it in a bit. Leave it on for about a minute and then rinse. Next apply the “conditioner” to your hair. Leave on for a minute and then rise thoroughly. That is it.
Ideally you want to no ‘poo your hair every 3-7 days. Hair does best when washed less. The more you wash it, the more oil it produces. This is why people who shampoo their hair every day think that they must because their hair is so greasy. In reality, their hair is so greasy because they wash it every day. You can choose how long you would like to go between no ‘pooing. If you aim for every 3-4 days, you will have a less noticeable detox but it will take longer. If you go for every 6-7 days you will have a fast but more noticeable detox.
Pretty much everyone will experience detox (aka greasy hair) to some extent. I do want to mention that detox should only apply to days following no ‘pooing. The day you no ‘poo, you hair should look amazing. As you go a few days without washing your hair then you will get that greasy look. However, as your hair and oils adjust to the new routine, you will be able to go longer and longer without having greasy hair. When I first began no ‘pooing I could only go 2 days before my hair looked gross. Now I can make it a whole week with nice looking hair!
No ‘pooing is a great way to use healthier hair products and save some money. I highly recommend giving no ‘poo a try. Odds are you have baking soda and vinegar in your home so why not give it a try?
