Sustainability means something slightly different to each of us. Daily we can all take actions to be sustainable and for each of us we may put our focus on different methods. The important thing is that we each do something to live sustainably. Sometimes it can be as simple as making a decision to make a purchase from a company that is also making steps to lessen their footprint on the earth, to be more sustainable.

Recently when I attended SoFabCon I came back to my room one evening to be surprised with herbal tea from Bigelow Tea. There were several assortment packages so I sent some home with my sister who had made the journey with me to help me with my children. She quickly reminded me just how much she enjoys herbal tea. I sent home some of the tea with her to enjoy. As a thank-you for helping me with the kids I have been wanting to get her something special. The more I learned about Bigelow Tea, the more I knew it would be the perfect way to say thank-you!

These are the perfect sweet treat to enjoy with herbal tea, my favorite double chocolate almond biscotti!

Benefits of Herbal Teas

There are so many health benefits to drinking herbal teas (although scientific research does not support this). Although traditional teas are derived from the camellia sinensis plant, herbal teas are produced from a variety of botanicals. Some herbal teas are specially blended together for specific purposes, others are often found in a singular form. Herbal teas can be made the same way traditional teas are made, they can be brewed and served cold or hot.

Just as is the case with any supplement, some herbs may contain allergens, so consult your doctor before using it for health purposes.

Here are a few of my favorite herbal tea varieties:

Chamomile Tea

While many times you will find the flowers of the chamomile plant combined with other herbs, you will often find a chamomile tea served alone. Some of the benefits of chamomile tea, include the reduction of inflammation and spasms a preventative to gas and infection, and is known for its ability to soothe and calm the nerves and as an aid to promote restful sleep.

Peppermint Tea

Who doesn’t enjoy the scent and taste of fresh peppermint? Peppermint and other mint varities It is not only refreshing but also is very soothing for an upset stomach and aids in digestion.

Orange Tea

If you have a sore throat or a cough, orange tea with a little honey can be very soothing.

Lemon Tea

Due to it being a part of the citrus family, lemon has long been known for lifting the spirits. It is believed to improve concentration and even help prevent nightmares.

Bigelow’s Herbal Tea SustainabiliTea Program

Zero Waste to Landfill – Sustainability has always been very important to the Bigelow family and they set a goal of being a “Zero Waste to Landfill” company. To meet their strict standards, companies must divert 90% of their waste from the landfill, meaning only 10 of the company’s waste can be trashed. The Bigelow family not only met those standards in three of their facilities but also surpassed them with the support of their teams and by their aggressive recycling, raw material reduction, reuse, and composting methods. That is hard to do just as a family but as a large corporation, that is amazing!

Energy Conservation – In an effort to reduce their impact, they installed 900 solar panels at their Connecticut headquarters, in an effort to protect the earth by supporting renewable energy and reduce their emissions. This one step produces about 200,000 kWh; that is enough energy to power 16 homes for an entire year. This translates to a reduction in pollution to roughly the equivalent of 200,000 car miles removed from the highways each year. In addition with a little planning, by efficiently shipping their loads and locating their facilities closer to their customers, they have reduced shipping miles by 50,000 miles a year since 2008.

Land Preservation – Bigelow Tea purchased the Charleston Tea Plantation in May of 2003 to save the 127 acres from future real estate development. The plantation is America’s own tea garden, having over 220,000 visitors tour the plantation since 2006. The Bigelow family also has a strong commitment to support New Hampshire’s land conservation program with a firm commitment to hold and maintain 220 acres they own in its current undeveloped condition by actively supporting New Hampshire’s Statewide Program of Action to Conserve our Environment (SPACE).

Ethical Tea Partnership – As part of the Ethical Tea Partnership, they work with tea growers to establish methods for responsible conservation of the world’s tea fields and improve the lives of the beautiful people who work them. Bigelow has been working with ethical tea gardens in Sri Lanka, India and China, who understand and have been following sustainable farming practices for over 30 years.

Most companies are focused on their bottom line rather than the impact of their company on the environment. Anytime I can support a company that really focuses on such strong sustainable initiatives I am very excited. To learn more about Bigelow Tea, be sure to stop by and visit their blog.

Gifting Sustainably

After falling in love with Bigelow’s initiatives, I stopped in to Walmart to put together a tea gift package for my sister. After selecting a basket to fill, Addie and I headed to the tea aisle. Bigelow offers great varieties and I couldn’t decide what variety to purchase so I picked up several packages of Bigelow Herbal Teas. Next we decided to add in a recycled travel mug as she heads to work before most get up in the morning and it would allow her to take her tea with her on the go. I love that the mug is not only made from recycled materials but also fully recyclable as well.

And what could be more sustainable than picking out a couple of herb plants to get her started herself. We went with spearmint and peppermint, two tea favorites and an organic herb starter kit from Seeds of Change that she can start in her kitchen window.

While we were in the garden center we also decided to pick up two natural air fresheners for our living room. Houseplants are a great way to sustainably give you cleaner indoor air to breathe. Addie loved that I let her pick them out. Although I want to add a few larger plants to our living room, for now the two plants we picked up will be perfect on the media chest until we are ready to move larger ones in. You can see my entire shopping trip in my #AmericaTeas Google + album.

Every day we have the chance to make small steps towards sustainable living. What is one thing your family does to live sustainably?

Does knowing exactly what a company is doing to be sustainably want to make you select their product on the shelf versus their competitor?

Potty training can be such a frustrating time for us as parents. After having a child in diapers for at least two years we are ready for potty training! Most of us have bills rolling in and let’s face it, diapers can be a big expense that can take quite a chunk out of our budgets.

Once we reach the milestone and have day time potty training conquered, then we must face the beast of tackling night time potty training!

For me, my potty training journey has been very different for my two children, one being a boy and another a girl. For Austin, once we totally conquered day time potty training, it was about a week before he had night time potty training complete. Nothing special other than routine but he was finished. My daughter on the other hand has been a totally different story, as most girls are. These are tips we are putting into practice to conquer night time potty training for good.

Five Tips For Night Time Potty Training

Wait Until Your Child is Ready – Just because we are ready for our children to be potty trained at night does not mean that they are ready. Our children being ready to follow their body’s signs during the day is totally different. For each child the timing will vary but if they are too young to get up during the night to go to the bathroom themselves, they may not be ready. Don’t rush a child that isn’t showing signs of being ready, it will just lead to frustration on your part and discouragement for your child.

Have a Night Time Potty Routine – Start a bed time routine and be consistent. One of the pieces of your routine is taking your child to potty right before the are tucked into bed. Before or after brushing their teeth, get them trained to empty their bladder.

Limit Drink Consumption Prior to Bed – It does no good to have them potty before they head to bed if you fill it up again. Set a time limit to stop heavy drink consumption at least an hour prior to bed. We always give the kids a drink of water as we tuck them in and they have water bottles next to their bed at night if they need them but avoiding filling up their little bladders will help.

Be Positive – We do not realize that our reactions will drastically impact our child’s potty training success. Try to not get upset when your child has an accident at night. It is bound to happen so be prepared. Assure them it is okay and rather than worry about the mattress becoming ruined, use a waterproof mattress pad to protect your child’s mattress. Give positive reinforcement whenever possible. Reward them for their successes and do not focus on the set backs.

Be Prepared – My children were so excited to start wearing “big kids” underwear during the day that they didn’t want to go back to diapers or pull-ups at night. After changing bed sheets night after night due to accidents, I decided it wasn’t an option quite yet and explained why. Neither enjoyed waking up at night wet so they were okay with my decision. With using regular diapers and pull-ups we still experienced leaking so we searched for the perfect overnight diaper.

Find the Right Night Time Solution

Finding the right “night time” diaper can be a challenge though. Ordinary diapers do not usually have enough absorbancy to handle multiple accidents during the night so even with regular diapers, you may likely have leaks. Finding an overnight diaper that works for your child is very important!

I recently tried out the Parent’s Choice Overnight Baby Diapers and found them to be super absorbent! After nearly three weeks of use we did not have one leak at night! They are specially formatted for overnight and long-trip protection. They have an enhanced dryness layer that will allow your little one to rest longer. The soft inner liner is hypoallergenic and treated with vitamin E and aloe for skin protection.

Considering we were only using one disposable diaper a night, it was much less expensive than purchasing diapers for every day use. By purchasing a larger package of Parent’s Choice Overnight Baby Diapers in a size three for $13.97 we were only spending about $4.80 for the entire month’s supply of overnight diapers! That is much easier on the budget and my mind knowing that they actually work!

Night time protection for babies is an important consideration for parents as their little one grows. Ordinary diapers may not have enough absorbent capacity to handle multiple voids over long periods of time with older babies. When wet mornings become the norm, parents start looking for more protection to guard against overnight leaks.

Parent’s Choice Overnight Baby Diapers are super absorbent for overnight and long-trip protection. For only $13.97 you can purchase Parent’s Choice Overnight Baby Diapers at Walmart for a 54-86 ct package! That is as low as $.16 a diaper. This is truly an overnight diaper at prices that everyone can afford!

I haven’t made any biscotti in quite some time. Today was the perfect day to bake and I decided that I wanted to enjoy the crispness of a biscotti with some hot tea, although the children prefer milk. This is a recipe I have made several times but tweaked it to make it double chocolate, chocolate anything sounds so good when you are pregnant!

Although it seems that there are quite a few steps, this recipe is so simple and well worth the time! I love that you can change it up depending on what type of nuts you have on hand or even substitute the chocolate chips for dried fruit, either way it will be delicious!

Double Chocolate Almond Biscotti Recipe

Ingredients:

2 ½ cups Flour (your choice, I use oat flour)

½ cup of Cocoa or Carob Powder

1 teaspoon Baking Powder

¼ teaspoon Salt

5 Tablespoons Softened Butter

½ cup Sugar

½ cup Sucanat or Brown Sugar

2 Eggs

1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract

½ cup Chopped Almonds

1/2 cup of Chocolate Chips

Sugar or Sucanat for sprinkling

Directions:

Position your oven racks near the center of the oven and preheat the oven to 325 degrees. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.

With your mixer, beat the butter, and sweeteners until blended. Beat in the eggs one at a time and then the vanilla extract. On low speed slowly add in your flour mixture until blended. Add your almonds ad chocolate chips; fold until just combined.

Flour your working surface and place your dough onto it. Divide it in half. The dough will be quite sticky and add in more flour as needed to be able to work with the dough.

Shape each piece of dough into a 12 inch log and transfer onto your baking sheets. Form the logs until they are about 4 inches wide.

Then brush each log slightly with water and sprinkle with sugar or sucanat.

Bake for 30 to 35 minutes until the dough feels crusty and firm to the touch. Allow it to cool for 10 minutes and reduce your oven’s heat to 300 degrees.

To get the best results, use a serrated knife and cut the logs diagonally into about ½ inch slices. Place back onto the baking sheets, cut side down. Continue to bake for an additional 18-22 minutes. Allow to cool completely.

Now that the weather is getting warmer it is getting to be the time of year for eating outdoors, grilling and having BBQs with the family. I can already taste this years watermelon, can you?

This week while my in-laws were visiting from Florida, the boys went fishing, several times actually. We planned to have a fish fry with the family with what they caught. The first afternoon they caught their limit in a short amount of time and the second day, well it was a bit slower but I think they still had just as much fun. With that in mind my Mother-in-law and I headed to Walmart with the kids to pick up a few items we would need and Scott Paper towels were on the list! You can learn all about my shopping trip in my #ScottValues G+ album.

When it comes to being practical, I have always considered myself to be a level-headed person. I am always looking for ways to save money, especially when it comes to ways to save on things my family already uses. I don’t think that just because something costs slightly less it is a better value, for me, paper towels fall into that category. I love the high quality that Scott offers. While I was in store I decided to also grab a large pack of Scott Bath Tissue as well. Don’t get me wrong, I love their Naturals line they carry as it contains some recycled materials but I love the Scott’s Extra Soft.

Ways to Save With Scott

Did you know that Scott offers a rewards program just for purchasing their products? I have been a member of the Scott Shared Values Program for over a year now. In that time I have received free Netflix movies, free Amazon MP3 credits, free Family Fun Passes and more!

Right now Scott is offering another way to save simply by purchasing their products! Have you heard about Vudu yet? It is a cool online service where you can digitally stream movies on select gaming system or Blu-Ray players on your TV or simply watch them on your computer. Right now you can find a free $4.00 Vudu Coupon on select packages of Scott Bath Tissue or Scott Paper Towels.

Simply by making my purchase of bath tissue and paper towels I received $8.00 in Vudu credits. We decided on Sunday evening since the kids were not feeling well to use one of the credits to watch —— It was great to not have to leave home but be able to curl up and watch a movie together in bed. It is such a simple process and signing up for a Vudu account is totally free. Actually right now you can score watching 10 free movies just for signing up for a free Vudu account!

Our Home Life with Scott

We often don’t think about how well certain products we are using work until we try something inferior. We were having a fish fry (as well as baking fish) and I was so happy we had high quality paper towels to soak up all the grease from the fish.

I rarely fry foods so my Mother-in-law was happy to take that job on.

Of course the guys were happy with their jobs of, well, eating!

If Addie doesn’t have a paper towel or cloth napkin on hand, she uses her alternative, her clothes. What can I say, she is three and likes to have a clean face. Good thing we had paper towels on hand for her as she ate her ice cream later that same evening.

Are there certain items in your home you just don’t think you can live without?

Why not reward yourself for something you are already purchasing? Be sure to cash in on all the ways to save with Scott by signing up for Scott Shared Values and be on the lookout for the $4.00 Vudu coupon!

After visiting the Planetarium at the Saint Louis Science Center, Austin came home and wanted to redecorate his room with planets and stars. We had just painted one of his walls with animals and the other walls had maps on them. Not a fluid theme, but Bryan and I decided we would allow him to choose what he wanted. Needless to say, the animals didn’t last very long as we purchased a set of glow in the dark planets and stars at the planetarium and he couldn’t wait to get them put up. We knew we could pull off a mixture of maps and the space theme on the ceiling.

Selecting Our Glidden Disney Paint

Although it took a while to get started, when we found the new Disney Paint line from Glidden it gave us the motivation to get started! We headed to Walmart to see if we could locate the new line! We were looking specifically for several of the specialty paints: Great Slate, Ready, Set, Glow!, and the All Things That Glitter.

Finding the Disney Paint was very simple. It wasn’t hard to spot the Disney signage. Knowing my children’s love of Disney, they spotted it when we were a long ways away! The colors they offer are beautiful and bright, which I love! The tag line for the Disney Paint is that every color tells a story and I couldn’t agree more. The specialty finishes are beyond amazing. Although we were focused on a theme for Austin’s room, we also picked up Disney Paint and the All Things That Glitter finish for a project for Addie room.

Austin had a blast selecting a blue color. He wanted one that would work for the sky and also the ocean as we are planning to decorate the walls with more maps and the ceiling with the nights sky. After going back and forth he finally decided that the “Boo Sky Blue” was what he wanted. Although I love bright colors I was hoping it wouldn’t be too bright.

The staff was extremely helpful with our paint selection and grabbed the Glidden paint we would need to mix the proper colors. I have to say that I was so happy to find out the Disney Paint was with Glidden as they feature low odor, no VOC paint. That in itself is totally important to me when we are selecting any paint.

We then had a great time selecting party favors for our Disney Toy Story Themed party. My sister Sarah was with the kids and I shopping and although we had the awesome idea to find mini chalk boards and chalk as one of the party favors they were no where to be found. We found wooden boards and decided to make our own with the new Disney Great Slate Paint. The kids were beyond excited to see we were adding Disney themed merchandise into our carts.

I was quite concerned with how the paint would actually cover over the darker color of the animals that were painted on the wall. Being pregnant I don’t feel safe adding a coating of Klitz so I was praying it would cover over the previous paint.

I couldn’t have been happier that the paint goes on so smoothly and I was beyond excited that with a single coating you could barely see the outline underneath. Once the second coat was applied they disappeared!

The Great Slate Paint was the next to be added as it needs to dry seven days before it is ready to be written on with chalk. Again, it went on smooth and we did two coating. We decided since the walls are textured rather than actually paint a chalkboard for Austin to use we would paint a large growth chart. It would be a perfect way to add a fun, customized growth chart to his room. Since we had the “Boo Sky Blue” painted walls we decided to just go with black but it is available in a variety of colors as well.

Then we added the Ready, Set, Glow! paint to the ceiling. Previously we had the large stick on stars (lets face it, are totally tacky but he loved them) so it was nice to replace them with something fun and more real! I am amazed at just how well the paint the works night after night! Austin loves for it to get dark now so he can watch his stars.

Even though the room is not fully decorated yet, we decided to have a party to celebrate as we had family in from out of town and Austin couldn’t wait to show off his new “Boo Sky Room”!

It was a warm afternoon so we decided to make simple finger foods and just focus on having a great time.

The kids were the most excited about getting to the balloons and the mini cupcakes.

We had a great time with playing with our bubbles, side walk chalk and having our mini scavenger hunt. It was a beautiful day to enjoy the weather and our friends and family.

Everyone loved the room and the ways we used the new Disney Paint! Now that we have fallen in love with it, we plan to add more of the Ready, Set Glow! to the walls by creating a glow-in-the-dark map and on the ceiling fan. I can’t wait to completely get the room finished to update you on our decorating projects.

There are so many fun Disney Paint options available from bright, bold colors to fun accent finishes available at Walmart.

How would you use Glidden Disney Paint to make your child’s room spectacular?

Do you have special memories of visiting the zoo as a child? I do.

My Mother would take us to the Little Rock Zoo quite often when I was growing up. We all loved it!

Now that my children are getting of age to really enjoy seeing the beautiful creations, I want to take advantage of it! We have animals, many types actually at home from rabbits, pigs, chickens, cats and a dog but their is something about seeing all the varieties that have been created for us to enjoy that is captivating.

We visited to Saint Louis Zoo for the first time in January of 2012 (it was freezing, but we were dressed appropriately) and loved it.

When we decided to vacation in Saint Louis this year, hands down we knew visiting the Saint Louis Zoo was a place we were headed back to. The kids were bursting with excitement on our last day in Saint Louis to be heading into the zoo. General admission is totally free!

We knew we wouldn’t be able to possibly see all the animals in the time frame we had so we had everyone pick what animals were the most important for us to see before we went to make sure we hit everyone’s favorites.

Addie wanted to head back to the penguins. They are adorable and you can really get up so close to them. Plan on being splashed but it is so totally worth it. It was perfect timing as we got to see them during their feeding and it was exciting to see the penguins interact with those that care for them.

Austin was hoping we would get to see the elephants. I was praying they would be out as during our last visit it was too cold for them. Not only did we get to see the elephants, we were able to see a whole family plus more. He was one happy little guy.

The Sea Lion exhibit that was recently opened was probably my highlight, it is amazing! Although we were not there at the right time to see one of the shows, we enjoyed watching them swim over us through the under water tunnel. The kids loved the fact that we could be below the water and not get wet!

Before we left, we stopped off for a ride on the beautiful carousel. Each ride is $3 or you can purchase a Safari Pass for $10 and enjoy all of the following:

Children’s Zoo

Zooline Railroad

Conservation Carousel

4-D Motion Simulator

Movie in The Living World

Stingrays at Caribbean Cove featuring Sharks (seasonal)

The weather was not permitting the Zooline Railroad to run that day, which Austin was really disappointed but it is something he will look forward to on our next visit hopefully this summer!

Conservation at the Saint Louis Zoo

The Saint Louis Zoo has formed a zoo-wide Resource Conservation & Recycling Committee to study energy and environmental practices that will conserve valuable resources.

Recycling

The Zoo currently is very focused on recycling and as a result they diverted 53.09% of its total waste from landfills in 2011.

Cardboard – The Zoo in 2011 recycled 63.32 tons of cardboard, saving 24,695 kilowatthours of electricity, and 570 cubic yards of landfill space and the associated cost of hauling 1,076 trees and 37,169 pounds of air pollution.

Paper – In 2011, the Zoo recycled 19.09 tons of mixed paper, saving 325 trees and 58.42 cubic yards of landfill. Because of the reuse of this paper, the Zoo avoided emissions of 11,206 pounds of air pollution and use of 8,839 gallons of oil.

Plastics – Through recycling of 6,297 pounds of plastics (#’s 1,2,3), the Zoo increased its rate for capturing discarded plastics from 29.1% in 2010 to 68.27% in 2011.

Animal waste – The Zoo recycled over 2,291,040 pounds of animal waste, bedding and green waste, sending these materials to Saint Louis Composting throughout the year. This initiative saved 1,146 tons of waste from going to landfills and provided finished products that were then reused.

Metals – The Zoo recycled 35,660 pounds of scrap metal, keeping it out of landfills and saving the cost of hauling it away. By recycling 8,816 pounds of precious metals, they were able to recoupe $1,608 for Zoo programs.

Light bulbs – In 2011, the Zoo’s light bulb recycling project continued, with all departments collecting their bulbs. On specific days during the year, these bulbs are recycled with Project Incorporated, a local non-profit organization; 1,441 pounds of light bulbs were recycled in 2011.

Electronics – The Information Technology Department recycled approximately 7,026 pounds of computers, monitors, printers, copiers and other assorted electronics in 2011. These go to Midwest Recycling Center in Saint Louis to be broken down and recycled.

Conserving Resources

Fuel – The Zoo recently changed many of its gasoline-powered vehicles to electric vehicles to avoid using higher-cost fossil fuels, reduce harmful substances released into the atmosphere and save money. The new bio diesel station, which was built and designed by Zoo staff in 2011, converts grease from Zoo restaurants to diesel fuel for Zoo vehicles and equipment. This project will result in substantial fuel savings for years to come.

Heating & Cooling – A new, more energy-efficient chiller, was installed in Penguin & Puffin Coast in 2011 to replace an older piece of equipment that kept the exhibit cool for the animals. This equipment is expected to save up to 75,000 kilowatt house of electricity annually.

I not only loved our experience as a family, but also that the zoo is so focused on reducing their carbon footprint, conserving our natural resources and minimizing the impact we have on the earth and it’s environment for the sake of the animals we were visiting to enjoy. If you would like to learn more about the zoos conservation efforts, visit their website.

Visiting the Saint Louis Zoo is hands down one of the best family fun things to do in Saint Louis. The general admission is totally free and they have so much to offer. We could totally spend many days here and hope to be visiting again very soon! The zoo is packed full of special events during the spring/summer months so I encourage you to check them out.

If you are heading close to Saint Louis, MO I can’t highly encourage you enough to plan a visit to the Saint Louis Zoo.

This was my year I decided I would make the leap and attend my first blogging conference. Not just any blogging conference but SoFabCon, the first blogging conference that Collective Bias was hosting. Not only would I get to meet a few of the Noise Girl bloggers that I work with online almost daily but I couldn’t wait to learn how to become a better blogger, to connect with my readers and grow my brand.

About two weeks prior to the conference they released the exact agenda for the conference. I was a little panicked when I realized that I needed a cocktail dress. Getting my hands on a maternity cocktail dress that I would not only like but also be comfortable in was going to be a challenge, or so I thought.

My New Found Maternity Style

I didn’t have the time to go over 2 hours away to shop for a dress so I started searching online. When I found Seraphine Maternity, a high-end collection that is reflective of the latest styles, I was drawn to several styles. They have dresses that sparkle and are full of glitz and glamor but also have chic and sophisticated styles that looked like they would provide sheer comfort while being dressed for the occasion.

When the time came I decided on the Royal Blue Knotted Dress with Cropped Sleeves. I loved the 3/4 sleeve length. It is made of soft silk like jersey cotton. Can I say sheer comfort! The material is perfect for any pregnant Mama. It is soft to the touch, stretchy, which is so important being pregnant and very classy. The knot design was what drew me to the dress. It offers elegance, and the knot design creates an ultra-flattering gather over your bump.

I can say I didn’t feel the least out-of-place at the cocktail party. I was comfortable (or as comfortable as can be being pregnant) and confident. I loved my dress and meeting two of bloggers that have helped me grow so much, Sarah of East 9th Street and Staci of 7onaShoestring.

Who says you can’t have maternity style?

Not Seraphine Maternity!

They also think past the baby bump with creating a chic V neckline that works perfectly for nursing. Many of the maternity dresses they offer also double as a nursing dress, so they can be used beyond the nine months of baby brewing.

About Seraphine Maternity
